This paper will discuss research performed jointly by Servo Corporation, Shaker Research Corporation, and Union Pacific Railroad on the subject of wayside acoustical detection of railroad roller bearing defects. Areas of interest covered include instrumentation utilized, data analysis scheme employed, and the nature of the bearing defects examined. The paper will also discuss the progress toward automation of the detection method for trackside application in an actual railroad environment.
