The U.S. Army has released contracts for development of a new helicopter: Light Helicopter Experimental (LHX). Part of the engine development requirements include simulation of engine 'drop' condition following autorotation. This requirement necessitates the design of a high response transient test system. Requirements for the transient test system include a number of objectives: a) perform collective pitch induced load change from flight idle to 95 % intermediate rated power (IRP) in one second, b) decouple the power absorber at zero torque and recouple when load is applied, and c) perform transients from no load to maximum power and maximum power to no load. New challenges such as these are driving the aerospace community to more innovative designs. This paper presents just such a design of a transient test system for the turboshaft engine for the Army's LHX Helicopter.
