This paper reviews the unique natural gas transmission system of Canada and the effect of deregulation on industrial gas consumers, transmission companies and the local distribution companies. It explains the environment leading up to deregulation and the result of deregulation on energy purchasing costs for industry. The interim period from November 1, 1985, to October 31, 1986, was a transition period from regulated to market responsive pricing. The opportunities and methods of price improvement are reviewed over this time frame and projections on what the future will hold for industrial gas pricing are presented.
