This paper describes some of the implicit technology needs and development issues related to thermal management of conceptual SDI spacecraft. Research needs in several areas of thermophysics and heat transfer are described. The envisioned needs are based or fundamental, first principles assessments of stated spacecraft mission requirements related to SDI communication, surveillance, space transportation and logistics, and weaponry concepts. These technology needs are driven in part by functional requirements related to projected system scale (size), pulsed power, and high heat flux, geometry, and temperature regimes of payload and power components, as well as, in some cases thermo-mechanical structural stability. These needs are also strongly influenced by spacecraft mission constraints related to cost, mass, life, reliability, survivability, and system compatibility. The technology needs give rise to a spectrum of evolutionary and revolutionary thermal management design approaches, and introduce basic and applied research needs related to payload and power system waste heat, acquisition, transport, storage, and rejection.
