This paper describes a preliminary effort to understand the thermal interactions in a large, space-based infrared telescope-cryocooler system. A SINDA thermal model was used to quantify the thermal characteristics of a cryogenically cooled telescope configuration typical of future space surveillance telescopes. The configuration was not based on specific mission requirements, but had many of the characteristics of telescopes being considered for future missions involving surveillance scanning near the earth limb. The results of the thermal model were used to investigate the effect that telescope design parameters had on the input power requirements of a multi-stage Joule-Thomson cryocooler used to cool the telescope. The results indicate that cooling requirements are relatively sensitive to telescope temperatures and that significant reductions in cryocooler input power can be made by properly selecting operating temperatures. These results have implications for both telescope and cryocooler development.
