Short-term planning by conventional means to control the characteristically dynamic shop-floor operations in manufacturing industry achieves only limited success owing to the complexity of the calculation involved. Computer-based simulation with attached graphic mode can compare alternative strategies quickly and is shown to be beneficial to rapid decision making at a company producing piece parts for the automobile industry. After verifying the benefits of long-term plans proposed for plant layout and manufacturing strategy, a model was used further to identify ways of reducing inventory and increasing flexibility of operation. By indicating how bottlenecks can be eased, and sudden disruptions to production overcome (by the identification of labour movement, alternative work centres and priority ratings for jobs), production efficiency can be improved.
