A drive system which consist of an induction motor (IM) and isolated gate bipolar transistor three phase inverter for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion is presented. Efforts have been made to ensure efficient operation of sliding mode torque and flux vector control of IM. A simple, robust and novel control strategy is proposed for driving and regenerative braking of EV. The distinctive feature of the scheme is its robustness to different initial condition values and parameter mismatch. A uniform dynamic IM model has been derived to facilitate the stator and rotor flux and motion control tasks. The advantage of the proposed IM torque and flux vector control scheme prevails over this conventional control scheme since no precise knowledge of IM model is necessary. The another advantage is its simple microprocessor implementation. The drive system, including a 18 kW, 4 pole, 6000 r.p.m., 120 V battery-powered IM and a 30 kVA IGBT inverter, has been applied to a pick up truck. Road test running of the truck has verified that the proposed control strategy is practical.
