A numerical formalism to treat gas flow through porous media is proposed. The treatment of underground gas flow requires compressible fluid dynamics and a precise thermodynamic description, if the flow is caused by large pressure gradients. A real gas equation of state (EOS) is applied to include the Joule-Thomson effect. Conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy; and all relevant thermodynamic relations are outlined. The temperature and pressure distribution around a leaky underground high-pressure gas pipeline is discussed as an example of practical interest.
