The Citizen's Network proposed by DGVII of the EU marks part of the European Commission's response to the challenge for providing individuals' mobility needs. Intermodal transport is a vital element of the response, allowing citizens to make 'seamless' journeys on a combination of modes which meet their individual need. The Telematics for Transport programme develops and validates suitable tools to support intermodal travel. A harmonised intelligent platform will allow the traveller support and operational management systems to function across modes. Through the demonstration phase, many of the non-technical barriers are also addressed. This does not underestimate the business, regulatory and management issues which remain. This paper reviews the challenges and describes the work and results of the current and previous programmes.
