Scientists throughout the world are finding new uses for the World Wide Web, and not just for the "passive" publication of scientific papers and data. Originally conceived just as a means of document delivery, World Wide Web has now evolved into supporting interactive data visualization and distribution. For example, a new scientific data system has been developed by the USA's National Space Science Data Center for providing access to online scientific data. This system has an open architecture, making it possible to add extra capabilities and new data with minimum maintenance and little reengineering. The paper describes the implementation and design of this new data system. Located at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Centre (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland, the NSSDC has been playing a pioneering role in stretching the limits of the WWW in creating systems that not only provide instant access to various data, but also allow the user to visualize the data.
