Modern motor cars and trucks depend increasingly on sophisticated electronic control systems to make life more comfortable for the driver and to enhance vehicle safety. It is important that these systems neither radiate excessive electromagnetic noise, which could cause interference with on-board or domestic radio reception, nor be susceptible to the electromagnetic fields that the vehicle will encounter on the road, since the latter could compromise vehicle safety. The article reviews the way in which EMC has been tackled by the automotive industry for the last 40 years and concludes that the automotive industry is well placed to comply with European Community EMC legislation.
