Development of power solid-state technology helped create various kinds of circuitry which contributed to considerably better traction and power consumption characteristics and reliability of electrical traction motors for rolling stock. Irregular actions of the locomotive driver (when the controller position contradicts the direction of movement of the locomotive) during shunting cause these circuits to develop undesirable phenomena (conditions of parasitic oscillation of electrical traction motors) causing various kinds of failure such as breakdown of the buffer diodes, damage of electrical traction motors, abrasions on the wheels, and the like. A thorough investigation of unwanted oscillations in electrical traction motors in these circuits may also be of interest if applied to rheostatic braking circuits. The process of generation of unwanted oscillations is discussed and a method is proposed to obtain an analytical solution to the nonlinear differential equations involved.
