In recent years, the electrical content of the average motor car has increased dramatically. As the functionality of these cars increases further, the electrical wiring harness servicing the functions must also grow, both in size and complexity. The authors use multiplexing to replace several signal-carrying cables with a databus using only one or two wires. The bus transmits this signal information around the vehicle. Some additional electronic circuitry is then required to code/decode the signals at either end. The authors show that such a system could be implemented cost-effectively.
