A test of high-definition television (HDTV) technology for use in launch operations, communications, and media postproduction is described. The test objectives, system description, camera tests, video tape recorder tests, and technical observations are discussed. The HDTV launch coverage of the STS-29 space shuttle mission successfully produced video of significantly improved quality, and operational feasibility was demonstrated. However, more stringent observance to equipment setup and maintenance procedures is necessary for consistent, high-quality results.
