The authors analyze experimental and mathematical methods used to evaluate the action of voltage pulses induced when an aircraft is hit by lightning on on-board equipment. Results are given from ground tests of medium and heavy transport airplanes and experimental investigations with various model objects. A procedure is suggested for calculating induced voltage pulses, including calculation of the spread of current over the surface of an object, penetration of the electromagnetic field through the skin and openings, and also wave processes in the aircraft and connecting circuits.
