Surface wind-stress measurements based on the inertial dissipation method were made from a small, easily deployable buoy during NORCSEX (Norwegian Continental Shelf Experiment). NORCSEX was a prelaunch ERS-1 experiment; techniques and performance assessments from this deployment are applied to postlaunch experiments with higher data density. The buoy platform provides opportunity for spatial measurements of longer duration than those that can be obtained from ships. Comparisons of buoy and ship-neutral drag coefficient result for a three-day period indicate that the buoy is a better platform for remote-sensing surface truth.
