The influence of errors by crew members on flight safety is studied. The estimates are based on a set of criteria calculated from statistical data on the civil aviation emergency rate by means of a multifunctional error model. Conditional probability of error according to the elements of the model is used to measure the degree of hazard involved in an error. A comparative analysis of criteria makes it possible to define a predominant group of errors mainly responsible for flight safety. Besides a detailed evaluation, a comprehensive criterion is formulated which supplements the generally adopted estimates of flight safety and offers an additive gauge of all types of aviation accidents and incidents. A method for evaluation of weight factors for this criterion is proposed.
