The author reports on the cabin-pressure fault simulator installed in the crew workstation used in testing astronaut systems for Europe's Columbus space station. The simulator simulates faults in the cabin's pressure system in order to test the response of a prototype CD-ROM expert system designed to analyse real faults. The author describes the Space Shuttle's pressure subsystem and its behaviour in the presence of faults. He outlines procedures adopted in Columbus when faults occur and describes the prototype expert system whose functioning the simulator tests. He explains hierarchical object-orientated design and object-orientated modelling in relation to the pressure system.
