The concept of using hypervelocity speed as a weapon is based on the physical principle that says an object pushed forward at a specific rate can accumulate enough kinetic energy to destroy just about anything in its path. Enhance this small, speeding bullet with a homing device, guidance system, propulsion and even an explosive charge, and the projectile emerges as a very lethal weapon in any arsenal. Hypervelocity projectiles propelled by electromagnetic forces to speeds in excess of 4471 miles per hour-or 2 kilometers per second-are at the heart of Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) programs designed to counter incoming ballistic missiles, and US Army programs designed to pierce the improved reactive armor on modern tanks and support close combat air defense systems.
