Various issues related to the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the automotive electronic system are discussed. As a case study, experiments performed to demonstrate the importance of proper wire harness routing and configuration to avoid ignition noise coupling to the vehicle's entertainment system are also reported. Definitions for five major requirements of EMC assurance are discussed. These five requirements, which cover both susceptibility (or immunity) and emission issues, are: radiated susceptibility, radiated emissions, conducted susceptibility, conducted emissions, and electrostatic discharge.
