A brief historical review of on-train battery applications covers coach lighting and diesel engine starting, with extensions to static convertors and local traction applications in some other countries. The numbers of batteries (and their division between lead-acid and Ni-Cd types) carried on Belgian and international passenger coaches, diesel and electric railcars and locomotives are tabulated with average and aggregate kWh capacities. Charging methods are compared, and the advantages and drawbacks of alkaline batteries are related to their initial cost (showing a three-fold increase since 1970) and shorter lifetime. Trends in construction and operation are discussed. Periodic inspections, remedial measures and (for Ni-Cd batteries) two- to three-year servicing practices are outlined, with a description of the capacity test.
