The United States Army reserve component automation system based entirely on commercial hardware increases speed and provides better discipline and structure to the mobilization process. Telecommunications will encompass both local connections, such as local area networks, and long haul network communications. Off-the-shelf software will be used wherever possible. However, the government will allow contractors to write software in a computer language other than Ada if they can prove the language to be more economical over the system life cycle. Updates to modular software will be possible without changes to one module disrupting other modules or functions. The software developers' major challenge will be to manage the interconnectivity between the numerous systems currently in the field and the software modules.
