Test flights being conducted with the United States Navy's Grumman F-14D Tomcat fighter aircraft and E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft symbolize a major advance in the ability of deployed aircraft carrier battle groups to exercise command and control of primary air defense assets-the long-range combat air patrol. Flight testing with the swing-wing Tomcat fighter equipped with the joint tactical information distribution system began in March 1990 at the test facility of Grumman Corporation in Bethpage, NY. A number of modifications have been made to the Hawkeye to accommodate the new capability. The aircraft also is being equipped with a General Electric APS-145 radar.
