The development and testing of sodium sulphur cells and batteries primarily for electric vehicle applications are described. Approaches to cell design are discussed and test data are presented to demonstrate the relationship between cell size and cell reliability and performance. The compact and rugged cell design developed by Chloride Silent Power Limited (CSPL) offers many of the characteristics required for an electric vehicle battery cell. A number of laboratory and field test batteries are developed. Their design philosophy is based on the small central sodium cells connected in four cell series strings connected in parallel to build up 8 volt banks (monoblocs) of the required capacity.
