Soviet designers are working on new advanced aircraft, both totally new models and upgrades to existing airframes. These new aircraft include two fighters, the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker; and two attack helicopters, the Mi-28 Havoc and the Ka-36 Hokum. Their designs come from the Soviet Union's best-known aircraft design bureaus: Mikoyan-Gurevich, Sukhoi, Mil, and Kamov. The Soviets have announced that they plan to develop the next generation of the MiG-29 that will feature fly-by-wire flight controls like those of the Su-27. The new Fulcrum will have a new wing design, digital engine controls, extensive use of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite materials, advanced cockpit avionics and a new, deeper-looking radar. The new 'Agile Fulcrum' may also incorporate some low-observable 'stealth' technology or at least stealth coatings. A new Soviet rotor development will be part of the Mil Mi-38, a planned replacement for the Mi-8 Hip helicopter. The new transport helicopter is predicted to carry 8800 pound payloads to distances of up to 370 miles. The new helicopter is scheduled to go into full-scale production in 1996.
