The Hillside car repair shop, a technologically advanced facility for the inspection and maintenance of commuter railroad cars on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in Hollis, NY, has a versatile and highly automated inventory and materials-handling/transportation system. The repair shop handles the re-upholstering of seating, the retrofitting of undercarriage traction assemblies, and the refurbishing and rebuilding of drive motors and wheels (up to 60 cars at a time). The materials-handling system is used for the storage and delivery of related parts. Various aspects of the system are discussed including the communications and control, installation requirements, antenna conductors burying, installation techniques, and coaxial cable placement. The advantages of this system are briefly discussed.
