A number of events in the 1980s contributed to the construction of dramatically quieter Soviet submarines. The response of the US Navy has been to upgrade their anti-submarine warfare (ASW) force with new platforms and advanced electronics. In order to improve their long-range patrol aircraft fleet, the Navy has begun development of the P-7A, provided an electronic upgrade for the 30-year-old ASW workhorse the P-3C and is upgrading the long-range, carrier-based S-3A Viking aircraft. In addition to its long-range capabilities, the Navy has introduced a carrier-based ASW helicopter, the SH-60F to provide 'inner-zone' ASW protection for the carrier fleet. The centerpiece of the Navy's effort to improve their long-range airborne ASW capabilities is the long-range P-7, the intended replacement for the aging P-3C Orion. Both the P-3 and the P-7 are built by Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co., (LASC) Burbank, CA.
