Since their introduction in 1971 modern DC drive methods have spread all over the world as a universally applicable power transmission system for traction vehicles. This article describes a large number of the vehicles currently in service equipped with the system and developments in semiconductors, control and cooling methods. A construction without motor housing has been introduced for prime mover motors. New methods of control enable converters and motors to be optimised while in future semiconductors will be available for still more powerful units allowing further simplification of the complexities of converters and controls.
