Although computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) workstations are being used more frequently in aircraft electronic subsystem development, virtually all military airframes are now designed, at least in part, with supercomputers. The use of supercomputers made by companies such as Cray Research Inc., Minneapolis, MN, has transformed the industry. Introduced as an aerospace tool in 1980, the Cray provides high-intensity computational power for research and experimentation in areas such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), aerodynamics structural analysis of composite materials, spacecraft and missile analysis, avionics, propulsion systems and computational structural mechanics. Cray's most recent supercomputer series, the Y-MP, features up to eight central processing units (CPUs), up to 128 million words of memory, up to 256 memory banks and processes a billion computations per second.
