The author sets out the basic assumptions being used to examine the main options for the system design aspects of electrification fixed equipment and connections to the electricity supply industry (ESI) high voltage grid system. The first consideration is how to translate business aspirations into the required electrical terms i.e. the anticipated short-term peak and average values of the traction load. These assumptions are then used to consider railway electrification fixed equipment ratings and identify areas where new designs will have to be developed. The effect of these railway loadings on the ESI is considered against the standards for 3-phase system disturbances and anticipated development of the high voltage grid system. Last, but not least, some safety implications of higher electrical loadings are considered.
