At the beginning of the seventies, fire risks increased considerably in the RATP (Paris Rapid Transit System) because of rolling stock modernisation and the transformation of underground installations. Electric cables represent one of the most important causes of fire propagation and, overall, of production of a large quantity of smoke during combustion. Halogen free cables represent great progress with regard to security. Their characteristics are comparable with those of PVC cables. The author argues that it has become urgent to standardise these cables and to extend their use to wherever the safety of installations and people is implied.
