The proposal to establish a high speed train service between Sydney and Melbourne, which became known as the 'Very Fast Train' (VFT), envisaged a dedicated rail system that would bring the two cities within three hours journey time, on an almost entirely new route of some 850 km with train speeds up to 350 km/h. The authors describe the work done to establish the options for and estimated costs of providing power for the proposal, now widely known as the VFT Project.
