The authors present a second generation automobile telephone method in Japan aiming to increase the directory capacity and miniaturise mobile equipment by employing an area-nondesignated dial method, and increase accommodation capacity for subscribers by employing various new technologies such as narrowness of the radio wave channel, diversity reception, same-channel interference detection, and transmitting power control, in order to cope with the capacity limits of the conventional method. The authors provide an outline of the system,; NTT 800 MHz equipment initiated services in the Tokyo area from May 1985.
