Trends of marine radionavigation are projected with reference to the use of radio beacons, Loran-C, Omega, and satellite systems. Radio-beacon coverage will be limited to single-line availability and used mainly for homing. Omega may be phased out by 2005 unless retained as a backup to satellite navigation. Loran-C may be around until 2015 or longer. Transit may be phased out by 1996. It is also suggested that when the Global Positioning System (GPS) becomes operational it may prove to be the answer to all of the mariners' navigation needs. However, there is international sentiment to retain a terrestrial system to complement the emerging satellite systems.
