Fiber-optic technology significantly enhances data transfer in today's electronic Navy. At the same time, it allows major changes in shipboard combat and platform systems architectures, as well as innovative designs in sensors and sensing elements. Fiber-optic technology has transitioned from the esoteric realm of long-haul telecommunications to short-distance, local area network (LAN) applications. This advancement directly applies to military data-transfer needs over relatively short (hundreds of feet) distances. As a result, these applications commonly use multimode fibers because they successfully serve most applications and are easier and cheaper to use. However, for more demanding applications, high-speed backbone or LAN architectures may employ single-mode fibers (fibers dedicated to a single purpose) and laser transmitters.
