NASA is developing a health maintenance facility (HMF) to provide the equipment and supplies necessary to deliver medical care in the Space Station. A computerized medical decision support system (MDSS) that will enhance the ability of the medical officer (paramedic or physician) to maintain the crew's health, and to provide emergency medical care, which is an essential part of the HMF, is described. The computer system has four major functions: (1) collect and integrate medical information into an electronic medical record from Space Station medical officers, HMF instrumentation, and exercise equipment; (2) provide an integrated medical record and medical reference information management system; (3) manage inventory for logistical support of supplies and secure pharmaceuticals, and (4) supply audio and electronic mail communications between the medical officer and ground-based flight surgeons.
