The authors present the performance goals and rationale for integrating electronic systems into medium and heavy-duty trucks. They note that successful integration of these systems with today's trucks requires careful planning and a thorough top down vehicle system design. Each sector of the design must be documented by way of component and subsystem specifications of drawings. These forms of documentation serve their purpose when they are reviewed, often during the active design phase, and interfacing components are verified for compatibility. Providing an electrical component that meets its own electrical and environmental specifications will not always insure that the component will function properly when installed in the vehicle. Details and examples are presented to demonstrate these points. It is concluded that it is very critical that the original equipment manufacturer and after-market suppliers should closely evaluate and analyze what effect an electronic component may have on a vehicle's performance.
