The authors look at the application of the Jackson System Development (JSD) method to a large real-time embedded system at Marconi Underwater Systems Ltd. (MUSL). They describe the characteristics of the software system; the circumstances in which the software developers at Marconi found themselves on the project; the way JSD and other improved practices were introduced; the results of these improvements on the project; a technical commentary on the way JSD was used, on the successes and on aspects that were less successful; the subsequent use of JSD on other projects at MUSL; and some recommendations on how to transfer software engineering technology.
