The problems and complexities of defending military aircraft from hostile forces are described. Many different types of weapon systems may be encountered, requiring rapid, accurate countermeasures for survival. It is shown how computer generation of a tactical situation display and computer control of aircraft sensors and countermeasures enhances aircraft survival, compared to autonomous or manual approaches.
