A Doppler acoustic profiling current meter was deployed in a sphere at the top of a subsurface mooring in the swift currents of the Strait of Gibraltar. Larger than expected currents caused vertical mooring excursions that in one instance exceeded 150 m. Despite these mooring motions, nearly continuous time series were maintained at fixed depths between 40 and 240 m. Mooring design, performance, and the potential for application of this system to other regions are evaluated.
