At General Motors' Delta Engine Plant near Lansing, MI, teams of employees have implemented a highly innovative process control system, with quality as its driving force, for the production of the Quad 4 engine, a 2.3 liter, in-line, double overhead camshaft, four-cylinder engine with 16 valves. Features discussed include testing only of a sample and that only after full assembly; all-round responsibility for quality; monitoring only of process specifications, not of part specifications; and the absence of a repair line. Conditions for employees are also discussed.
