For modern weapons consisting of a carrier rocket and a set of submunitions, data on the pitch, roll, yaw, and position of the submunitions are obtained from optical tracking, generally by a TV tracker. The rocket, the rocket's skin, and the sudden shift in the direction of the submunitions can confuse the TV tracker, so a method is needed to determine if the tracker is tracking a submunition or one of the other objects. To determine the location of a submunition accurately, radar data on the carrier rocket can be smoothed by a standard Kalman filter. The authors explore the application of a simulation routine as the filter function.
