MIL-STD 1553 is a serial transmission format used by the US Air Force for avionics communications, based on a 20-slot/20- mu s time multiplexing, Manchester data-encoded format. It is bidirectional, and its encryption is optimized for minimum data loss and maximum baud throughput. The goal in testing this application is to emulate the precise format of MIL-STD 1553. The author describes a functional automatic test equipment (AGE) test approach using a scheme of parallel driving pins and sequentially firing driving pulses within a high-speed digital burst. Using this method, the tester can accept an easy-to-read parallel pattern format and translate these data bits into the Manchester serial stream.
