US auto executives describe five basic lessons they have learned over 10 years of intense competition: (1) technology is only a tool; it should never be viewed as an end in itself; (2) the ultimate success of new technology depends on the workers and managers; (3) constant and thorough employee training must be integral to the design and manufacturing process; (4) companies no longer have time to design cars and then figure out how to build them: product and process must be engineered together; (5) changes should be made in small steps; jumping ahead of the competition with untried processes and technologies is doomed to failure.
