More than 26 years ago, the first airborne command post (ABNCP) aircraft took off from Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska, the headquarters of the Air Force Strategic Air Command. Initial ABNCP communications capabilities consisted only of high frequency radio equipment and airborne radio operator specialists who would operate the equipment. Over the 26 year life span of these assets, many modifications have been made to the airframe and communications equipment. These modifications produced a complete command, control and communications (C3) suite covering the full spectrum of radio frequencies up to and including the super high frequency band. ABNCP has evolved into a network of Worldwide Airborne Command Post resources supporting the decisions of the national command authorities and commanders in chief of US nuclear forces. These resources constitute the network of airborne command facilities that will provide a vital survivable command and control (C2) link essential for orderly direction of military forces in the event that primary fixed surface command facilities become incapable of doing so.
