The command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) analytical and reporting environment is dynamic and demanding. In today's world of sophisticated front-end sensors and data processing equipment, C3I analysts face the difficult task of managing an overwhelming volume of incoming data in an effective and consistent way. The technology of artificial intelligence (AI) may prove to be a key part of the solution to this growing problem. The C3I community has responded with an equally strong commitment, eagerly sponsoring research, prototyping and implementation efforts. For example, studies recently were conducted in four representative C3I functional areas: C3 network analysis (C3NA); threat analysis; parametrics production for the Air Force C3CM Support Data Base (AFC3CMSDB); and tactics analysis. These studies primarily were designed to identify and evaluate potential AI applications for the targeted domains. The described research carefully considered the broad nature of AI technology to ensure that a comprehensive review was conducted.
