The US Army has embraced a three-tier architecture as a broad conceptual umbrella and has labeled the network realized from this as the Standard Army Network (STARNET). The three-tier architecture is essentially a concept needing translation into an implementable system design. The architecture is a framework upon which STARNET, an operational common user information processing network, can be built; it also serves as an objective system to discipline future capital plant improvements. STARNET's initial assets will have to consist of Army Standard Information Management Systems (ASIMS) (old Vertical Installation Automation Baseline); compatible data processing centers at the installation level; and appropriate user terminals, local area networks (LANs) and office automation assets.
