The approaches to obtain the air and surface and situational display is dependent on the location, number and detection capability of the airborne sensor. Several tactics have been discussed to provide the tactical picture (detection and close control data for interception). The employment of a 30000 foot platform provides a flexible approach to the task. However, the concept of a long fly-by type tactic is not supportable against an airborne threat. Continuous coverage as opposed to trip wire coverage is necessary. The endurance of the sensor platform is not critical to the coverage. The number of assets required to accomplish the objective is dependent on the sensor capability and the extent of the coverage zone. The communications between the sensor platform and the ground control authority have been demonstrated for the E-2C platform over the horizon under several conditions. HF data link was demonstrated as early as 1978 to several rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) countries employing an airborne E-2C and a van containing a compatible ground terminal.
