A simulator on commutation process in DC machines has been established with Matlab/Simulink. By means of this simulator, the dynamic current at each commutating coil, and thereby the current distribution underneath brushes, can be visualised on the computer screen. The major harmonic currents in commutating coils are caused by the switching action of commutators bars. Under the pulsating DC supply, however, the peak current in commutating coils varies with the armature current, which increases the maximum current density underneath brushes. Combined with the neural network model for flux distribution, the developed simulator is a fast and reliable tool to monitor the impacts on motor commutations from various dynamic operations and design parameters. The major advantage of this simulator is being able to observe the transient process caused by any parameter variations during the simulation.
