There is a continued trend in the motorcar industry to replace formerly belt driven auxiliary units like the valve actuation or the air conditioning plant by electrically powered ones. This will strongly increase the installed capacity of the loads. The resulting demand cannot be serviced by today's energy generating standard sets any more. That is why car alternators, converters and networks will undergo fundamental changes with a view to increase power and effectiveness. This paper presents a converter for a 42/14 V network, which features full adaptation to the car-specific requirements and does not compromise on effciency. The proposed new asymmetrical three-level converter distinguishes itself by providing three stabilised voltage levels. It makes possible the introduction of multilevel automobile networks with minimum additional component count (reliability)e same time it upgrades the efficiency of the power conversion. In addition, through the active rectification new features come into the car like cut-in speed reduction, that means better utilisation of the generator or a supercapacitor charger which is also hidden in the circuit and may be software activated, if the 42 V battery is going to be replaced by a starter-supercap some day.
